成千上万的人们明天早上将走出家门，观看一个我们一生中都不会再见的天文奇观：金星凌日。
上面报道中的transit of Venus就是“金星凌日”。金星轨道在地球轨道内侧，某些特殊时刻，地球、金星、太阳会在一条直线上，这时从地球上可以看到金星就像一个小黑点一样在太阳表面缓慢移动，天文学称之为“金星凌日”。Transit作为天文学中的术语时指的指一个planet（行星）或月球经过另一个较大的celestial body（天体）的表面，尤指太阳。另外人造卫星也会凌日，一般把人造卫星“凌日”叫做Sun Outage（日凌）。
“金星凌日”原理上类似于solar eclipse（日食）。常见的天文现象还有sunspot（太阳黑子），annular solar eclipse（日环食），partial solar eclipse（日偏食），及meteor shower（流星雨）等。观测“金星凌日”时，需要佩戴专门的eclipse shades（日食观测镜），或者在望远镜上装上solar filter（滤光膜）观察，这样还可观察到金星internal ingress（入凌）和internal egress（出凌）时的black drop effect（“黑滴”现象）。
